Mobile FEES

Who needs FEES?

-Patients who have been on modified diets for an extended amount of time.

-Patients with a new diagnosis of dysphagia or who you suspect may have dysphagia.

-Patients who need a swallow treatment plan to manage dysphagia and rehabilitate the swallow.

-Patients who require modifications to their diet due to an underlying disease process.

Why FEES?

COST: FEES costs about 1⁄4 of a traditional swallow study done at a hospital. That’s a 75% savings for instrumental swallow evaluation over an outpatient VFSS/MBS! When patients can get off of thickened liquids, the annual cost of providing those liquids to a patient are eliminated, potentially saving thousands of dollars each year.

CONVENIENCE: We use your facility’s foods and liquids, with your facility SLP in attendance, in the patient’s natural eating environment to provide accurate, patient- centered recommendations. The primary SLP can attend and collaborate during FEES, even bill the 92526 dysphagia treatment code, keeping your SLP productive while assisting and collaborating!

ACCURACY: Research supports FEES as a reliable method of assessing swallow physiology as well as penetration and aspiration of food and liquids. FEES has also shown to be higher in specificity and identifying penetration, aspiration, residue and spillage of foods and liquids.

IMMEDIATE RESULTS: With the treating SLP in attendance, results and recommendations are immediate. There is no waiting for the MBS/VFSS to be scheduled or to get the SLP report! Treatment strategies and diet changes can be implemented immediately. We provide a written report at the end of the test for your record and the patient’s chart.

Speech Therapy and Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative movement disorder that affects about 1 million people in the US. PD can cause tremors, slowing and stiffening movements but its symptoms are diverse and usually develop slowly over time.

Most people with PD will experience changes in speech/voice, swallowing, and cognition at some point. The same symptoms that occur in the muscles of the body (tremor, stiffness, and slow movements) can occur in the muscles used when speaking and swallowing.

Early intervention with a Speech Language Pathologist is key to maintaining and improving communication and swallow function. Improvements following speech therapy at any stage of PD can improve quality of life. It’s never too late to get help.
